LaGRANGE — Troup County sheriff’s investigators announced Friday they have added numerous charges to an inmate after he allegedly encouraged other inmates to assault detention officers Wednesday inside the jail.

Markeith Anton Rutledge, 31, of LaGrange, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on peace officers, felony obstruction of officers and inciting a riot.

Investigators said one detention officer was choked and another received a sprained wrist during a large disturbance in one of the housing units. Order was restored quickly, Troup County Sheriff’s Office officials added.

Rutledge and his girlfriend, Candace Renee Earnest, 23, were arrested last weekend at the Lafayette Garden Inn on Lafayette Parkway after LaGrange police officers discovered suspected prescriptions pills and illegal drugs in the couple’s car.

In that incident, Rutledge was charged with possession of a schedule IV narcotic with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, obstruction and possession of drugs not in the original container.

LaGrange police also reported Rutledge actively tried to fight officers as they tried to handcuff him and take him to jail.
