Lady Cavaliers open region schedule with dramatic win

The Callaway Lady Cavaliers won a thriller.

Facing the homestanding Central-Carroll Lady Lions in their Region 5-AAA opener on Friday, the Lady Cavaliers won 44-41 in overtime.

The game was tied 38-38 at the close of regulation, and Callaway outscored Central 6-3 in the four-minute extra period to get the road win.

Re Re Porter scored all four of her points in overtime to help Callaway prevail.

Senior guard Tanesha Johnson, who was making her season debut, led Callaway with nine points, and Zamari Hardnett and Chyna Cameron each scored seven points.

In Friday’s boys’ game, it was the Cavaliers beginning defense of their region championship with an 84-76 win over the Lions.

Dre Martin had a big game for the Cavaliers with 26 points, Joe Brown added 21 points, and Ernest Patillo scored 11 points.

LAGRANGE: The Grangers moved to 2-0 in Region 1-AAAAA with a 78-54 road win over Columbus High.

The Grangers were up 43-24 at the half, and they continued to pull away in the second half.

Derieko Smith led LaGrange with 15 points.

In the girls’ game, it was Columbus winning 80-62 as LaGrange fell to 1-1 in region play.

Chnaireia Strozier paced LaGrange with 23 points, and Aryan Dozier added 21 points.

Shania Woodard was also in double digits for LaGrange with 10 points.

LaGrange’s teams will be back in Columbus today to play Carver, with the girls’ game tipping off at 5 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow.

LAFAYETTE CHRISTIAN: The Cougars are still perfect, but they had to work for it.

Lafayette Christian improved to 8-0 with an 84-80 road win over Central Christian.

Jemi Reed paced the Cougars offensively with 28 points, and he also had nine rebounds and four steals.

Antavius Sands scored 23 points and had seven rebounds and five steals, and Marcus Mobley had 18 points, eight rebounds and six steals.

In the girls’ game, it was Lafayette Christian falling short 36-16.

Roni Bowman had six points for the Lady Cougars, and Rory Kloster had five points and 10 rebounds.

Lafayette Christian’s teams host Holy Ground on Tuesday.
