This is an open letter of commendation and appreciation to the 306 singing participants and 18 directors, pianists and back-up instrumentalists who took part in an extraordinary event on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016. This event was the West Georgia Choral Arts Festival at the Callaway Auditorium on the campus of LaGrange College.

The groups represented were the Choral Society of West Georgia, Sons of Lafayette Male Choir, both private colleges in Troup County, all three public high schools and the Voices of the Valley Children’s Vocal Ensemble — from the Columbus area. Each group sang two renditions, culminating in the combined choirs singing three songs, which resulted in a standing ovation!

Dr. Beth Everett of LaGrange College was the lead director — and was very innovative in her use of the central aisles of the auditorium with the LaGrange College Chamber Choir!

This event exemplified what a small area of west Georgia, with a wealth of musical talent, can present to its public. I want to strongly recommend to the children and youth — from age 8 up! — to continue their participation in music. It will greatly enhance their lives!

On a personal note, I began my musical journey in Miami Beach, Florida, at the age of 7 in 1946, when I began piano lessons, until 1957, in college in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. And beginning in 1953, I’ve been in various church choirs — be they small or large.

Now in my late 70s, I’m in a church choir in Hogansville, which contributed four members to the two adult choirs on Saturday, including the inimitable and versatile pianist Eve McKibben!

Again, I say, thank you!
