The 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient is the late Rev. Bradell Allison-Martin and will be presented posthumously during Sunday’s Fourth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in Hogansville.

The Rev. Martin was a native of Hogansville and graduated with honors from West End High School. She would later marry the love of her life, Mr. Charlie Frank Martin. She was a local civil rights activist and organizer, who worked alongside her male contemporaries in the 1960s and early 1970s to make our county a better place, until her passing in March 28, 2017, at the age of 75.

Bradell was a known seamstress within the community and the surrounding areas. She later became an ordained minister and pastored Newnan Chapel in Newnan, Roe’s Chapel and Smith Chapel in Harris County. Bradell was one of the first female African American Methodist ministers in the North Georgia District. She paved the way for many more women to achieve the mantle of fully connected ministers.

She worked together with the late Lucious Glenn and Harold Smith to foster the West Side Voter League, a non-partisan political organization that was instrumental in getting African-Americans registered to vote and to exercise that vote at the polls. Bradell knew and understood the power of the ballot box, and worked tirelessly throughout her life to educate voters through her many efforts, which included facilitating candidate forums throughout the community.

  

Keynote Speaker Announced

The featured keynote speaker will be Pastor Jimmy R. Gibson, Sr., an accomplished minister, musician and singer with over 30 years of pastoral leadership experience. He comes from a line of gifted preachers, as his father and grandfather were major contributors to his early accomplishments in ministry. The Rev. Gibson is a blessed, anointed and gifted man of God who is committed to carrying out God’s Vision.

He is currently serves as the full-time Pastor of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Atlanta.

  

City of Hogansville Proclamation and Special Recognition

Hogansville will also honor one of its own during the ceremonies, former Callaway Cavalier and Georgia Bulldog Terry Godwin. The junior wide receiver played an integral part in the Bulldogs 54-48 win over Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl, which gained them a spot in the 2018 National College Football Championship against Alabama. After catching eight combined balls from Oct. 28 to Nov. 25, Godwin has caught five passes each in the SEC Championship and Rose Bowl. He caught four in Monday’s title game. The mayor and city council will honor him with special recognition and a proclamation during Sunday’s event.
