LaGrange native Marcus Riggs, a student at Georgia State University in Atlanta, recently graduated from the Black Retail Action Group (BRAG) 2013 summer internship program. BRAG has served as one of the rare organizations that offers guidance to high school students, college students and young professionals of color who are interested in careers in the fashion and retail industries.
“My experience with the BRAG summer internship was a great opportunity for me,” Riggs said. “I was able to meet other students from different parts of the country, with a strong interest in fashion, business, and retail. The organization really helps you become more familiar with the retail industry with different breakout sessions that allow you to focus specific parts within retail.”
He interned with the coproate marketing department at Macy’s, and was a merchandise marketing intern for Omni Channel.
“Other students in my internship class interned at Macy’s Inc, Bloomingdales, Footlocker, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Old Navy, Giant Foods and Stop and Shop,” Riggs said. “BRAG gives you the opportunity to create bonds and relationships that will last longer than your internship and help you move forward within the retail industry.”
This year, BRAG placed 22 students from nine universities. Riggs successfully completed an internship with Macy’s and will now join a roster of BRAG graduates including Alain Lafontant, who is the current VP of brand development for Sean John and graduated from the BRAG internship program in 1996. The scholarship and internship programs are essential components of the BRAG platform. Since 1975, more than 1,100 interns have participated in the BRAG program.
