The Troup Tigers hung tough with the powerful Sandy Creek Patriots Friday night, but they were unable to pull off the huge road win.
The Patriots, who are trying to win a fourth state championship in five seasons, used a dominant defensive effort to beat the Tigers 21-0.
Troup (2-3 overall) fell to 1-1 in Region 5-AAAA, while Sandy Creek (4-0-1) improved to 2-0 in the region.
Troup’s defense was strong early, forcing the Patriots to go three-and-out on their first few possessions, and the game was scoreless after the first quarter.
The Patriots finally got it going in the second quarter, though, with back-to-back touchdowns to take a 14-0 lead at the half.
Still down by 14 points, Troup got a long pass play from quarterback Will Smith to R.J. Hairston to put the ball on the Sandy Creek 33-yard line, but that possession ended with a missed field goal.
Sandy Creek capped the scoring with a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
