Local fundraisers seeking donations for cruise
An online donation site is available at www.youcaring.com/help-a-neighbor/help-mary-meet-alabama-/97678 to donate to Mary Davenport and her husband Ron of Troup County to raise money for plane tickets to travel to Miami, Fla. The couple for 12 years have put on car shows to benefit the American Cancer Society, and Mary Davenport has suffered from breast cancer and Ron Davenport, who is in a wheelchair, from prostate cancer. Mary Davenport recently won a contest to go on a cruise with her favorite band, Alabama, but cannot afford the cost of travel to the cruise site. Local raising money for diabetes research
Polly Griesbach, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 2, is raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund by running in the Walt Disney World Marathon on Jan. 12, 2014. Her goal is to raise $2,750 for the 26.2-mile run. Donations for the fund can be made on her behalf at www2.jdrf.org/goto/runwithmickey
Grace for Children seeking foster parents
Grace for Children Foster Care is recruiting for new foster parents. Homes are needed for children ages birth to 18 years old, and especially for sibling groups and teenagers. Center seeking donations for clothes, money
The Yolanda Jabaley Clothing Center is in need of children’s clothes and clothes for teenagers. Money donated to the center is used to buy new underwear and shoes. Hours of the center are 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, March through May. To donate items when the center isn’t open, call director Rose Meister at 706-302-0179 or Bergeron at 706-885-9388. United Way seeking weekly readers
United Way Succes by 6 is seeking volunteers to be “weekly readers” and read to pre-schoolers at local schools. Readers may choose what times and schools they want to volunteer with. Anyone interested may contact Gail Gordon at firstname.lastname@example.org or 706-884-8292.
Care baskets for breast cancer patients
The Troup County breast cancer support group, Breast Friends for Life, is in need of new or gently used baskets. BFFL makes gift baskets for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Baskets need to have a handle. No Christmas or Easter baskets. Baskets may be dropped off with Wanda Lowe at Enoch Callaway Cancer Center, 111 Medical Drive next to West Georgia Health.
