In an effort to assist the underprivileged in the city of West Point, the West Point Police Department has teamed up with the following agencies and businesses to sponsor the 2013 West Point Police Department’s Christmas for the Community Gala: The Friends of the City of West Point Golf Committee, Powertech, WOW, KIA, The Salvation Army, Judicial Correction Services, Inc., and The United States Marines Corps League. The sponsors donated money, toys, coats, diapers, and food.
Twenty children and their families and 20 seniors were selected by the mayor and council, clergy, the principal at Long Cane Middle School, and representatives of the West Point Senior Center to participate in the Gala.
The children selected will have the opportunity to Shop with a Cop. They will be given 200 dollars to buy Christmas presents for themselves, parents and siblings. The gifts will be purchased prior to the event and will be given a police escort to Walmart in Valley, Ala., for Christmas shopping.
The children will be escorted back to The Depot where they will be greeted by Santa Clause, wrap gifts and eat a catered lunch with their families, seniors and volunteers.
The 20 seniors will also be provided with a box of assorted food and winter coats.
With support and donations, coats, diapers, baby wipes, stuffed animals, puzzles and toys will be provided to a second group of 70 children and infants.
“The West Point Police Department’s Christmas for the Community Gala is just one example of people coming together to make the city a better place today,” Major Drew Ferguson said.
The Christmas Gala will take place from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Saturday at The Depot 500 3rd Ave., West Point.
