Callaway’s Terry Godwin and Troup’s Mitch Mathes will be a part of an elite field of players participating in an all-star game next week.
Godwin and Mathes will both play in the Georgia Junior Bowl, which will be held in Atlanta on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Grady Stadium.
The game features many of the top juniors in the state, including Godwin and Mathes, who will be a part of the West roster.
Godwin played wide receiver and defensive back for the Cavaliers, and he’s also an outstanding kick returner.
Mathes, meanwhile, is an offensive lineman for Troup, and he has been starting since his freshman season.
Godwin was a key reason the Cavaliers went 12-2 and made it to the Class AAA semifinals last season.
In the playoffs, Godwin had an interception return for a touchdown, he returned a punt for a touchdown, and he had several big catches, including one that set up a touchdown against Buford in the semifinals.
Godwin has been heavily recruited since he was a freshman, and he has received multiple offers from schools across the country, including the University of Georgia.
Mathes stepped into the starting lineup in 2011 for a team that made it to the second round of the state playoffs, and he has been a fixture on the offensive line since.
For the past two years, Mathes has helped running back Daryl Dunlap amass more than 2,000 rushing yards.
In other all-star football news, Callaway’s Tez Parks and Dunlap are each slated to play in the Georgia vs. Florida all-star game that will be held in West Palm Beach, Fla. on Jan. 4.
Dunlap is also scheduled to play in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association North-South All-Star Football Classic on Monday.
The game is set for 2 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
