This year’s theme for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade and float contest was “Can We Dream Together.” The float contest and winners were awarded before the parade began Saturday.

The participants’ floats were judged on theme, creativity, originality and overall appeal. Judges Maurice Pritchett and Laura White returned this year along with new judge Darcy Leis.

First place went to the Theta Xi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha. The float featured posters encouraging to dream together about love, non-violence, jobs, service and higher graduation rate. It also had a section called “dreams fulfilled” where they highlighted local business and individuals who dreams had been fulfilled.

Judge Leis said it was their local and historic detail which pushed them into first place.

“Theta Xi Omega chapter is very excited about receiving the first place award,” Chapter President Benita Epps said. “We worked very hard and highlighted our programs that we sponsor throughout the year.”

Second place was awarded to the West Georgia Star LaGrange Housing Authority. Its float was constructed by the youth leadership team and was decorated with clouds stating the youth’s dreams hanging from the float.

In third place was Rutledge Home Daycare. The theme for its float was to feature youth around the world.
