The LaGrange High boys’ soccer team got its region schedule off to a rousing start.
Facing the Alexander Cougars on Tuesday at Callaway Stadium, the Grangers earned a hard-earned 2-0 victory in the Region 5-AAAA game.
The game was scoreless most of the way, but the Grangers notched a pair of late goals to take the win.
The Grangers had their chances throughout the game to take the lead, but the Alexander goal keeper either made a stop, or a shot attempt just missed the net.
With a few minutes left in regulation, the Grangers finally scored, with Matthew Thomas putting the ball past the goal keeper on a free kick from about 30 yards away.
The outcome remained in doubt until, with 15 seconds on the clock, Jackson Fagundes scored on a direct kick to seal the win.
Since a season-opening loss to East Coweta, the Grangers (4-1) have won four consecutive games.
In the LaGrange Invitational over the weekend, the Grangers beat Harris County 4-1 and Jordan 6-1.
In the win over Harris County, Fagundes had a hat trick with three goals, and Michael Brackett scored the other goal.
Against Jordan, it was Brackett coming through with a three-goal performance, and Griffin Bartley, Yimmi Posada and Qua Tucker each scored one goal.
In Tuesday’s girls’ game, the Lady Grangers had their hands full with a strong Alexander team and lost 6-0.
The Lady Grangers (2-3) went 1-1 in the LaGrange Invitational.
They beat McEachern 4-2, and lost to Oconee County 2-0.
LaGrange’s teams will return to the field on Friday for a region doubleheader at Columbus High.
