Twenty bikers helped raise over $500 for March of Dimes Saturday, during SAFA LLC’s “Ride for a Cure” in LaGrange.

This is the first year the company incorporated the bike ride as part of its annual fundraising efforts for the charity and Valeria Holloway, HR Administrative Assistant for SAFA in LaGrange and the company’s March of Dimes chair, said the company plans to make the bike ride an annual event.

“Considering spring break, the turnout was not what we expected but we were very pleased with the outcome,” said Holloway.

Riders traveled from SAFA, located at 621 W. Lukken Industrial Drive, to Roanoke, Ala., then Franklin before finishing at Granger Park on Hunnicutt Place.

SAFA LLC Vice President, David McCarty, told the group that when SAFA began as a small company 10 years ago, the company wanted to find a charity to support.

“We couldn’t support every charity and unfortunately there’s a lot of charities out there and it would just dilute our support down so much,” said McCarty. “We picked March of Dimes back then because when you’re talking about babies, you’re talking about the future of the world really. So we got behind it and we have stuck with the March of Dimes as our charity. It gives us great pleasure to support March of Dimes each and every year.”

McCarty thanked employees for organizing the ride and taking their “personal time” to be a part of the event. He also thanked those who participated in the race.

For nearly 10 years, SAFA LLC has held annual fundraising events for March of Dimes, a charity that funds research and programs that works to end premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality. Throughout the month of April, the company will be hosting several fundraising events to include a barbecue lunch, home-made Easter basket sales, T-shirt sales, raffles and more.
