A couple of home runs combined with another stellar pitching performance from Perry Keith was enough to lift the Callaway Cavaliers to a 4-3 road victory over Woodward Academy on Thursday.
Keith improved to 4-0 with the complete-game effort, and Terry Godwin and Chase Freeman each hit home runs for the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers improved to 13-4, and they bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to Northside.
Keith gave up just four hits and struck out eight, and the only blemish on his day came in the fifth inning when he surrendered a three-run home run.
Woodward Academy’s ballpark is extremely hitter-friendly, and Callaway coach Dusty Hubbard said the ball likely would have stayed in play at Callaway’s field.
“It was not a bad pitch,” Hubbard said. “I think at our park, it’s probably a flyout.”
Keith didn’t give up another run, and Callaway held on for the one-run win.
“He was really good. He continues to do a great job,” Hubbard said. “He’s kind of turned into our ace, the guy we count on.”
Callaway was on top 4-0 after scoring one run in the third inning, and three more runs in the fifth.
In the third inning, Nick O’Berry walked, Godwin singled, and Cody Mimbs reached on a bunt base hit.
Freeman then drove in the game’s first run with a groundout.
In the third inning, O’Berry again got things started with a double, and Godwin followed with an opposite-field home run that soared over the right-field fence.
Freeman then hammered a ball to straight-away center for a solo home run, and Callaway’s lead was 4-0.
Woodward got within one in the bottom of the fifth, but Callaway never gave up the lead.
“We did what we needed to do to win,” Hubbard said.
The Cavaliers finished with eight hits, and Mimbs and Godwin each had two hits.
Cortney Laye and Austin Garrett also had hits for the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers are off until Monday when they visit Sandy Creek, and that will be the first of four games in four days.
On Tuesday, Callaway will host Rockmart in a key Region 4-AAA game.
The Cavaliers will be on the road against B.E.S.T. Academy on Wednesday, and Haralson County on Thursday.
