LaGrange High’s Andrew Coggins is a state champion again.
Coggins raced to the top spot in the 1,600-meter run on Thursday at the Class AAAA state track meet in Jefferson.
It’s the second state championship for Coggins, who captured top honors in the 800-meter run in the 2013 state meet.
Coggins nearly won the 1,600 a year ago, but he settled for a second-place finish.
Coggins made sure he would be the first one across the finish line this year.
Coggins finished the four circuits around the track in a time of four minutes, 19 seconds, and he held off a trio of runners who were just two seconds behind him.
Finishing in fifth place was Coggins’ teammate at LaGrange, sophomore Sam Bowie, who had a time of 4:26, five seconds off the pace.
Coggins has one race remaining in his high-school career, and he’ll attempt to win a second straight championship in the 800-meter run.
Qualifying for that event is today, and the finals will be Saturday.
On Saturday, Bowie and fellow LaGrange Granger Jonathan Pelham will race in the 3,200-meter run.
Callaway’s Tyler Sinkfield will compete in the qualifying races for the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash today, with the finals set for Saturday.
