A rivalry that dates back more than 100 years will resume today when LaGrange and Newnan get together.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Newnan’s Drake Stadium.

It’s a preseason game and the outcome won’t affect either team’s win-loss record, but the intensity factor will likely still be high considering the history of the rivalry.

The teams played for the first time more than a century ago, and it has always been a fierce rivalry.

Of late, Newnan has had the upper-hand in the rivalry.

Since winning the 2004 season opener 35-7, LaGrange hasn’t beaten Newnan.

With last year’s 42-20 victory over LaGrange, Newnan has won seven consecutive games in the series.

The two teams were unable to play in the regular season this year, but they were able to line up the preseason game.

LaGrange, which is under the direction of first-year head coach Dialleo Burks, will open its season on Aug. 22 against Callaway.

LaGrange is looking to bounce back after going 3-7 a year ago.

Also today, Callaway will return to Hogansville for its preseason game.

Callaway has been playing a preseason game at Hendrix Field for the past decade, and most of those games have been against Greenville.

Those two teams will play again today at 7:30 p.m., and Callaway will open its season against LaGrange on Aug. 22.

Callaway is coming off a 12-2 season that ended with a 24-14 loss to Buford in the state semifinals.

Troup, which went 6-5 a year ago, will play its preseason game at Upson-Lee today before kicking off its season on Aug. 29 against LaGrange.
