‘Union County Stocks the Pantry’
by Derik Vanderford Staff Writer
UNION COUNTY — The Union County Recreation Department is partnering with the United Way of the Piedmont to collect food for those in need in the local community.
The UCRD has begun a new project called Union County Stocks the Pantry.
According to the project flier, one in five people in Union County live below the poverty level. Of those, one in three are children. Because the UCRD works closely with its next door neighbor — the NonProfit Partnership Center, which serves as a local presence for several non-profit organizations including United Way of the Piedmont — UCRD Director Becky Cobb decided to take on the suggested project and turn it into one in which all county employees can participate.
The department was assigned the Trinity Baptist Church Mobile Food Pantry, and the first phase of the project will allow county employees of each department — as well as the public — to donate non-perishable food items during the week of Oct. 21-25 at the Union County Courthouse. UCRD will supply a box for collections and it will be located near the supervisor’s office. The following are non-perishable food donation suggestions:
The second phase of the project — scheduled for a time to be announced on Nov. 7, 8, or 9 — will be for volunteers to take the collected food items to Trinity Baptist Food Pantry and stock the shelves. Although the date and time have not been finalized, the UCRD is looking for volunteers to help with transport and stocking.
