A week-long manhunt ended Friday when police said they captured a man suspected of killing a 20-year-old Callaway Avenue man.
Devonte Cortez Thorpe was taken into custody Friday afternoon and is suspecting of slaying DeJerius Hardnett last Sunday. The assault occurred on Dawn Drive near Chip’s Way in LaGrange and the victim was flown to an Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died.
Police aren’t releasing details about the murder as they build a case against Thorpe, but LaGrange police detective Jason Duncan said they’re glad to have found Thorpe.
“We’re excited that we could get him into custody,” said Duncan. “We’re glad we can begin to give the family a little bit of closure.”
A different officer, speaking on background of the case, earlier confirmed that the death may be gang-related.
Thorpe has been on the run since Sunday, when he allegedly stabbed the victim and stole his car. Police issued two warrants for his arrest — one for murder, and another for vehicle theft.
Troup County Crime Stoppers was offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction. It is not known at this time if a tip played a role in Thorpe’s capture.
Last year, there were four murders in LaGrange, according to the public safety department’s 2013 annual report. LaGrange averages 3.2 murders per year, averaged over five years.
