A 1-year-old child died Sunday after drowning at an access park on West Point Lake south of LaGrange.
The child, whose name is not being released, was found by his mother unresponsive in shallow water at Long Cane Park shortly before 12:30 p.m.
Authorities arrives just three minutes after receiving the 911 call and immediately began performing CPR and other life-saving measures. The boy was transported to West Georgia Health hospital and was pronounced dead.
Troup County Sheriff James Woodruff told the Daily News the mother left the child unattended for only moments. She was at the park with other children and family friends, he said.
The case appears to be a “tragic accident,” and is being investigating by the sheriff’s office, a press release said.
This year, there was one other drowning on West Point Lake, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which oversees the lake.
The Corps reminds visitors to the lake to always wear life jackets and practice appropriate safety measures when using the lake.
West Point Lake is more than 40 square miles and includes roughly 525 miles of shoreline.
