The Troup County Board of Education formally adopted a $94.96 million budget on Thursday.

The budget contains overall $94,211,637 in revenues – $40,712,081 from local taxes and $961,000 from other local sources, minus about $1 million in county tax collection fees, with $52,985,822 from the state and $568,418 from other sources – and $94,960,867 in expenses, with the biggest expense in instruction at $60,116,956. The difference of $749,230 in revenues and expenses will be taken out of the school system’s reserves to balance the budget.

The school system is facing about a $4 million overall reduction in state funding for next year. The budget incorporates the same furlough days for employees as the past year – five days for central office staff and two days for teachers – and reduction of about 29 positions.

Jones said the budget is based on the same millage rate as last year, which is not expected to go up. The school system still may need to hold hearings on the millage rate if it does not roll back the millage rate for property revaluations that increased.

Jones said staff wouldn’t know until Monday if the property valuations would necessitate hosting the hearings. The board on Thursday set three dates for the millage rate hearings, if they are needed, for July 7 at 10 a.m. at Hogansville Elementary School and 6 p.m. at West Point Elementary School, and July 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Administrative Services Center.

The Board of Education on Thursday also approved an agreement with Hillside Montessori to lease the former pre-k building at the former Unity Elementary School campus for $2,000 per month. The lease will include utilities for the 8,726 square-foot building and would begin Aug. 1 and run through June 30, 2015.

In other business, the board on Thursday approved:

• Renewal of agreements for interpreting services from Sarah Christman at a cost of $64,800 and occupational therapy services from West Georgia RESA at a cost of $176,656.77.

• A contract with Hutchinson Traylor Insurance in an amount not to exceed $350,000 as the school system’s liability and automobile insurance carrier for fiscal year 2015.

• Purchase orders to renew and extend services for the fiscal year 2015 school year from five vendors: Renaissance Learning Inc. for elementary and middle school Accelerated Reader book tests at a cost of $48,781.18; Loy’s Office Supplies for system-wide copier maintenance of 170 copiers at a cost of $70,000; Edgenuity for e2020 high school credit recovery and HOPE Academy programs at a cost of $69,601.52; Curtis Lawn Care for service at several schools at a cost of $36,995 and New Ventures for lawn service at other facilities for $9,424.

• Adding Smith Design Group as an approved architect for school system projects.
