It has been a week since Ledia King, 15, was last seen walking in the 800 block of Rocks Mill Road. Investigators with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office reported she was last seen at 2 p.m. on June 16 and are asking for any sightings of the teenager.
Investigators do not suspect any criminal activity involved in the disappearance, but her disappearance presents risks because of Ledia’s diminished mental capabilities.
Evelyn King, Ledia’s mother, said the teen has emotional and mental disabilities that impedes her judgement and decision-making skills. Though she is a teenager, Ledia has the mentality of a 9 year old, Evelyn said. The danger is heightened because she has not been taking her medication.
Investigators reported they currently do not have any leads and are relying on anyone who may have seen Ledia in the past week.
The family has only lived in a LaGrange for a year and, according to her mother, Ledia does not know the area well.
A search party held on Saturday in the Rock Mill Road area involving a K-9 Unit, a helicopter and nearby agencies from Coweta County, but had negative results on Ledia’s whereabouts, officials said.
This is not the first time Ledia has walked away, her mother said. She disappeared twice while the family lived in Louisiana, but was found in one to two days near their subdivision within a two mile radius.
Evelyn described Ledia as very outgoing and friendly. She added that the missing teen aims to please others and does not have the judgment skills to warn her away from strangers. Her greatest concern is that her daughter tends to do whatever it takes to gain attention, no matter how wild or crazy, and would not think twice before getting into a car with someone.
Evelyn has been driving around with family and friends non-stop looking for any signs of Ledia saying that the ordeal has been “very scary” and “difficult.”
When the Daily News spoke with Evelyn King on Monday afternoon, she was on her way to the Lee’s Crossing area, where she said Ledia may have been spotted. No further information was available as of this report.
“Anything anyone can do to help find her would be appreciated,” she said.
She urged anyone with any leads, no matter how small or insignificant, to contact investigators.
If anyone sees Ledia, Evelyn King emphasized that they do not try to apprehend her, but to immediately call officials.
The missing teen is described as biracial, black and Hispanic, and 5 foot 7, 160 pounds.
Ledia was last seen wearing a white shirt, brown “gladiator-type” sandals, a black back pack with “SHAW” written on the back. Her hair is shaved on both sides and she will often style her hair in a Mohawk or off to the side, according to her mother.
She also has a burn scar on the back of her right leg. Evelyn added that she wears an earring in the top of her right ear.
Ledia has a very distinct smile that shows a lot of her teeth, Evelyn said.
Investigators said the most important factor is getting Ledia’s picture out to as many people as possible and hope for a reported sighting.
