Four local 2014 high school graduates will be recognized during the 30th annual Sweet Land of Liberty Parade July 4, themed “A Star-Spangled Spectacular.”
School personnel from each school chose a senior who displayed strong moral values, leadership and patriotism to be the recipient of a Proud American Award. The winners will be introduced and will participate in the parade.

LaGrange Academy, Kayla Jae Fannin, American Eagle

Micah Bolden is the son of Ricky and Glenda Bolden and will be attending Wheaton College in Illinois to major in business economics; He received the Don & Ann Scholarship, Ramirez Scholarship and the Theta Nu Lambda Scholarship.
He was a member of FBLA, Jr. Red Cross, National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Service Club, tennis team and is an Eagle Scout. Voted Mr. LaGrange High, Micah has also volunteered with Paint the town and March of Dimes.
Adam Kazmi is the son of Sameh and Sherri Kazmi and will be attending the University of Georgia to major in anthropology; He will be receiving the Zell Miller Scholarship.
He is an Honor Graduate and was part of the ROTC, National Honor Society, Drama Club and has played tennis and soccer for Callaway High. He received the Air Force Association Award and AP Scholar Award and was chosen as a senior superlative.
Matthew Robert Schoonover
Matthew Schoonover is the son of Bruce and Kim Schoonover and will be attending Georgia Tech to major in mechanical engineering; He received the Zell Miller Scholarship, a band scholarship, Hooper Knight Scholarship, and Diverse Power’s Round Up Scholarship.
He was part of marching band, Interact, Key Club, Beta Club, Robotics Club, National Honor Society, and Tri-M Music Honor Society. He also received the John Phillips Sousa Award.
Kayla Jae Fannin
Kayla Fannin is the daughter of Jerone and Angela Fannin and is attending Auburn University, majoring in micro-biology with plans for a career in stem-cell research; She received the West Point Community Scholarship.
Kayla was President of SGA, Vice-President of chorus, Treasurer for National Beta Club, Secretary of TNT and Latin Club, was captain of the varsity cheerleading squad, and on the soccer and volleyball teams.
She also the sang the National Anthem at an Atlanta Hawkes game in October.
The parade, honoring grand marshal Jeff Lukken, will begin at 10 a.m. on the Fourth of July, with line-up at 9 a.m at the parking lot behind the Carmike Cinemas movie theater on Main Street. The route will travel down Main Street and around the square to Bull Street, then back to Main Street.
For participation in the parade, registration forms can be filled out at the Troup County Parks & Recreation center, located at 1220 Lafayette Pkwy. Participants are encouraged to decorate bicycles, wagons, etc. but no motorized vehicles will be allowed.
All decorations must be made by the participant themselves, though adult guidance is permitted. All motorized vehicles, animals and commercial advertising are prohibited. No children may be removed from the parade while in progress.
Young children should be dropped off with their entry at the starting location and the only adults allowed in the parade line-up are registered parents or group leaders; Judging will begin at 9:30 a.m.
The parade is sponsored by Troup County Parks and Recreation and directed by the Junior Service League of LaGrange.
