The Georgia Department of Education recently released to school districts throughout the state Criterion Reference Competency Test (CRCT) scores.

CRCT performance is reported through scale scores and performance levels. There are three performance levels, each corresponding to a range of scale scores. The performance levels are: does not meet (scores less than 800), meets (scores from 800 to 849) and exceeds (scores 850 and above). The percentages reported below represent the students scoring at least 800 or better on the standards as established by the state.

“Now that CRCT scores are in we will thoroughly analyze results, identifying both areas where we did well and that need improvement,” said Troup County School System Superintendent Cole Pugh. “We will then analyze our written curriculum, instructional resources, and instructional strategies as we continuously strive to provide resources to teachers and campus leaders. District- and campus-level plans for improvement will be developed from this data analysis.”

Test results for the 5,455 Troup County School System (TCSS) students in grades three through eight show:

• Ninety-one percent of third graders met and exceeded reading standards. Over 43 percent of students exceeded.

• Fourth grade reading scores show that 94 percent of the students met and exceeded criteria, matching the state. Forty-seven percent of students exceeded in this testing category.

• Over 40 percent of fourth grade students exceeded science standards.

• Eighty-three percent of fourth graders met and exceeded in social studies, which is 2 percentage points higher than the state.

• Overall, the number of fourth graders exceeding social studies test standards surpassed the state by nearly 5 percentage points.

• Fifth grade reading scores show that 95 percent of students met and exceeded, which matched the state. Forty percent of the students exceeded standards.

• English/language arts results for fifth graders show that nearly 97 percent met and exceeded test criteria.

• Ninety-one percent of fifth grade students met and exceeded in math, which is four percentage points higher than the state. Forty-nine percent of the students exceeded.

• Fifth graders also scored two percentage points higher than the state in meeting and exceeding science standards. Forty-six percent of students exceeded, which is four percentage points higher than the state.

• Eighty-four percent of fifth grade students met and exceeded social studies test criteria; this is four percentage points higher than the state’s average. Over 35 percent of the students exceeded, which surpassed the state by 8 percentage points.

• Over 96 percent of sixth grade students met and exceeded in reading. More than 45 percent exceeded.

• Nearly 78 percent of sixth grade test takers met and exceeded in science. This is four percentage points higher than the state. Twenty-eight percent of students exceeded in this testing category, outpacing the state by 6 percentage points.

• In social studies, more than 80 percent of sixth graders met and exceeded social studies test criteria. Forty-six percent of students exceeded, which is higher than the state’s average.

• Seventh grade students performed well in reading, math and English/language arts. Ninety-two percent of students met and exceeded in reading. More than 88 percent of students met and exceeded in math, and 91 percent met and exceeded in English/language arts.

• Ninety-six percent of eighth grade test takers met and exceeded in reading, while ninety-four percent met and exceeded in English/language arts, matching the state. In math, 82 percent of students met and exceeded standards. Thirty-four percent of students exceeded in math.

“I commend the teachers and students for their hard work, and I look forward to the progress we will make as we move into next year,” said Karen Cagle, assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and professional learning. “Expectations for teachers and students are high, the curriculum is rigorous and there are new initiatives aligned to the standards. There is definitely work to be done as we move to the new, more rigorous Georgia Milestones Assessment System next year.”

The CRCT has been given for the last time. Beginning next year, the Georgia Milestones Assessment System will be implemented in grades three through 12.

The new testing system is aligned to Common Core Georgia Performance Standards in English/language arts and mathematics, and Georgia Performance Standards in science and social studies. Georgia Milestones will include open-ended questions and is expected to provide a more realistic picture of academic progress.
