The reopening of the newly renovated Price Theatre is only one of many events scheduled for LaGrange College’s homecoming festivities this weekend.

“We are so excited about everything we’ve planned this year,” said Martha Pirkle, director of alumni and community relations. “Panther Palooza returns to the square Friday night for its third year, and we’re looking forward to celebrating with our campus and community friends. There truly is something for everyone throughout the weekend.”

Price Theatre and Lamar Dodd Art Center will host an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Retired music professor Martha Estes, wife of the late Dr. Max C. Estes (former theatre professor), will be at Price Theater during the open house.

Next door at Lamar Dodd, an opening reception for three new exhibits at Lamar Dodd will spotlight “Intersecting the Parallels” by Pimprae Hiranprueck, “look away” by Donna Mintz and “Paintings by Eugene Carriere” from the Nick Vlachos Collection.

Comedian Bobbie Evans Oliver of Los Angeles returns to her alma mater Friday to present a free evening of comedy at 8 p.m. in Callaway Auditorium.

Oliver, who graduated from LaGrange College in 1990, recently was named one of the “best comics in America” by the New York Post for the second year in a row. She has appeared on ABC, TNN, Style, NPR, Comedy TV and Sirius XM Comedy Radio.

The comedian has performed and taught comedy at University of California, and is a comedy teacher, public speaker, freelance writer and author. She is the founder of StandUp Academy and owner of Tao Comedy Studio in Los Angeles. Chris Oliver ’91 will provide the opening act. The show is open to the public.

Also on Friday, the 30th annual Tom Duckett Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Panther Club, tees off at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Highland Country Club. A record number of teams have registered for the event.

Friday’s festivities will conclude with the third annual Panther Palooza from 6 to 8 p.m. in the downtown square. Pouncer will be available for photos with his fans, an inflatable slide will be set up for children and DJ Alan Slaughenhaupt will provide entertainment.

Alumni registration will begin at 6 p.m. Those who sign in will receive a coupon for themselves and a guest for one slice of Mighty Joe’s pizza, one scoop of ice cream or a cupcake from Cakes by Debbie and a Panther Palooza airbrush tattoo.

Saturday’s festivities begin early with the 5K Fun Run and 1-Mile Walk. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Callaway Education Building, and the run and walk will start at 8 a.m. Cost is $10 and proceeds will benefit Harmony House.

The Alumni Recognition Breakfast will be at 8:30 a.m. in Dickson Assembly Room at Turner Hall. Honorary Alumni Awards will be presented to Dr. James F. Bruce Jr., Martha Estes, Clifford Glover and Dr. Don Jolly.

Also honored will be the 2013 Sports Hall of Fame inductees Kelly Britsky and Dr. Josh DuBose. The 2003 LaGrange College baseball and golf teams, United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Champions, will be feted. Space is limited, cost is $15 and is payable at the door.

Other activities planned for Saturday include a Homecoming float display in front of Callaway Stadium and reunion tents in the auditorium parking lot.

Something new this year will be a recording booth to document stories about the college. Guests will have the opportunity to share memories and identify old photographs from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the auditorium. Contact alumni@lagrange.edu to schedule a time.

The football game against Maryville kicks off at 1 p.m. The Sports Hall of Fame inductees will perform the ceremonial coin toss and the national anthem will be sung by graduate Ali Grieb. The homecoming queen will be crowned at halftime.

Homecoming activities will come to a close on Sunday with the annual Alumni and LaGrange College Community Memorial Service at 11 a.m. in the Chapel. It will be followed by a Sunday brunch buffet at Margaret A. Pitts Dining Hall. The $8 fee is payable at the door.
