Sovereignty means being in control of your own destiny. Said another way it is freedom from external control. The United States of America is a sovereign nation. This obviously means that we make our own decisions and that we are in charge of our own destiny. Why then would we even consider yielding control of any portion of our sovereignty to some global super-government?
We may be the only nation in the world with a constitution that guarantees our individual rights. Freedom of speech, press, religion and the right to bear arms are all guaranteed. Why would we even briefly entertain the idea of allowing some global body such as the United Nations control over these rights or any other part of our national identity? And yet, there are those who would do this.
The U.N General Assembly adopted the Arms Trade Treaty regulating the international trade in conventional arms, from small arms to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships. That means someone “outside” the USA would have control over our right to bear arms. And even our right to a strong national defense. Fortunately, our Senate voted to reject it. Unfortunately, the vote was 53 to 46 when it ought to have been unanimous! Why would any US Senator vote to give away any portion of our sovereignty?
This is only one example of a trend that is gaining momentum in America. The concept of “globalism” says that the United States is not exceptional. It declares that the United States is flawed in many ways that can only be corrected by giving up our sovereignty to a global governing body. And who would have influence in that global body? That would be the countries that treat women as chattel. Who want to “clean up” the internet. Who believe that Christianity must go and that Israel should be erased from the map. What next? Would it become an international crime to demonstrate publicly for views that are unpopular? Will being against abortion on demand be declared a crime?
Look at the United States and see the wonderful and positive impact our nation has had on the world. Instead of trying to make America like the rest of the world, we should be attempting to make the rest of the world more like America. That’s it! Those who want to give away our sovereignty see this nation as needing to change — to become more like the rest of the world. Let’s stand up and be counted as those who see the United States as great and virtuous and willing to look at our flaws and correct them without outside interference. What has our sovereignty produced over the last 200 years? Just the place that everyone on earth wants to get to. They all want to come to America. Yes, with all our shortcomings, we are still the place people will risk their lives to get to.
