Resident Jennifer Smith started the organization Secret Elves in LaGrange, and this year the non-profit made its first donation to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in what Smith plans to be a regular event.

“I have a son who is 13 and he has hemophilia and type 1 diabetes. He was born with hemophilia and in 2009 diagnosed with diabetes. I always wants to do something to give back, but didn’t know what to do and how to go about it,” Smith said. “So last year I started non-profit organization Secret Elves. We will be doing fundraisers to raise money for the organization, send money to find a cure for both medical and also collect toys to deliver to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Christmas.”

Smith hopes the organization will grow and have more funds to eventually do more in the future. This year, she collected money and donations at area businesses.

“We put up a box at Billy’s Country Store (and) Sunny’s Home Cooking in Valley, Ala., held a raffle and raised $516. We also had individuals donate, as well as some employees at Cargill in Newnan,” Smith said. “I went shopping and bought items with the money donated. I delivered the toys and other items to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta on Sunday, Dec. 15. The backseat was full of bags as well as the front seat. I want to thank everyone that donated!”

Smith said she plans to have more events to collect toys and other items for the organization to donate in 2014. Anyone interesting in helping Secret Elves was asked to contact Smith at 706-594-6015.
