The cancer program at West Georgia Health recently was granted a three-year accreditation with commendation by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons.

To earn voluntary accreditation through the Commission on Cancer, a cancer program must meet or exceed 34 quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.

A three-year accreditation with commendation is only awarded to a facility that complies with standard requirements at the time of its triennial survey. A commendation is given for exceeding standard requirement for one or more standards.

West Georgia Health’s cancer program received five commendations, placing it in the silver rating status.

“The outcome of the accreditation process has affirmed our belief that we have an excellent program,” said Charlene McClanahan, director of WGH Oncology Services. “We are extremely proud of having been recognized for having achieved a Silver Rating through receiving five commendations.”

Like all CoC-accredited facilities, WGH’s cancer program maintains a cancer registry and contributes data to the National Cancer Data Base, a joint program of the CoC and American Cancer Society. This nationwide oncology outcomes database is the largest clinical disease registry in the world.

Data on all types of cancer are tracked and analyzed through the NCDB and used to explore trends in cancer care. Commission-accredited cancer centers, in turn, have access to information derived from this type of data analysis, which is used to create national, regional, and state benchmark reports. These reports help CoC facilities with their quality improvement efforts.

“A great deal of work went into this process, and every single employee associated with the program deserves to be congratulated for the success of the accreditation,” McClanahan said. “On behalf of all of the West Georgia physicians, nurses and staff members, we are grateful for all of the support we’ve received during this process, and we look forward to continuing to meeting the needs of the cancer patients and their families, in LaGrange and the surrounding area, for many years to come.”
