More than 450 acres of unincorporated Troup County property may be annexed into the city of LaGrange, including several businesses and part of Ethel Kight Magnet School.
The city of LaGrange notified Troup County officials of requests to annex two areas, one more than 457 acres near Interstate 85 and Whitesville Road. The property on Whitesville Road is proposed for industrial, commercial and residential zoning inside the city.
As part of a new policy to see rezonings, commissioners heard about the proposed annexation at commission’s Friday work session. The county has the authority to raise an objection to any annexations within seven days of being notified, although commissioners voiced no concerns at Friday’s meeting.
The Whitesville Road rezoning would allow the businesses requesting access to city services, like sewer, water and power. It is also adjacent to a planned development by the property owner, which the businesses lease from.
County Engineer James Emery said the annexation would mean a loss of some revenue to the county from business licenses from those on Whitesville Road that would be annexed to the city, including Arby’s, McDonald’s, Pilot and The Cart Barn. Business licenses and beer and wine licenses for some of the businesses represent an annual revenue of about $2,450 to the county.
The second proposed annexation is 17.5 acres at Ethel Kight that would put the entire school property in the city. Currently, part is in the city and part is on unincorporated land.
“The city limits literally go right through the middle of the school,” said LaGrange City Manager Tom Hall.
The school system is planning to renovate and build a new school on the property. Annexation would give it access to city services.
Emery said there was no problems with the proposed annexation or rezoning.
“This would decrease an island of county land in the Kight neighborhood,” Emery said. “We’re not opposed to the zoning and there’s not really any issues with this rezoning.”
Without county opposition, the annexation requests will be carried to the city’s planning and zoning board and ultimately LaGrange City Council.
