West Point shooting determined accidental

Troup County sheriff’s investigators and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have concluded their findings in a recent shooting of a West Point man.
According to Troup County Spokesman Stewart Smith, investigators and the GBI believe the death of Joseph E. Howard, 44, of West Point appears to be an accidental shooting.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Jan. 2, when officers responded to the 300 block of Baughs Cross Road in West Point in reference to an unresponsive person found by a family member. Upon arrival, sheriff’s deputies found Howard dead with a single gunshot wound to the torso.
Sheriff’s investigators worked with the GBI and came to the conclusion that Howard’s death was indeed accidental, since he was home alone when the incident occurred.
