Travis Shelnutt, 40, of Hogansville was arrested Tuesday on charges of aggravated assault with a knife/cutting tool and cruelty to a child in the third degree.
According to a Troup County Sheriff’s report, deputies responded to Hogansville Road in reference to a domestic dispute. Officials said a woman reported that Shelnutt, her significant other, came at her and her two year old child with an ax during a confrontation. He swung the ax but missed.
During the fight, Shelnutt fled the scene and the woman was able to call 911.
Shelnutt returned to the home and was arrested on the charges above according to officials.
Detectives said they are still investigating the case and looking into further charges that may be filed against Shelnutt.
Shelnutt is being held in Troup County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.
