Walmart officials confirmed that a Walmart Neighborhood Market and service station will be opening in LaGrange at the beginning of 2015.
Construction at the site, located on Lafayette Parkway across from the Calumet Center, began in early June and is expected to be complete in December, according to Stewart Perry Construction representative Paul Broderick.
It is unclear when the company closed on the property, but LaGrange Community Development Director Alton West said the business permit for the site was secured in May, which also indicated an estimated construction completion date of December.
Amanda Henneberg, senior manager of communications for Walmart, said the upcoming neighborhood store will be about 41,000 square feet and offer a variety of products and services.
“Our Neighborhood Market stores give our customers quick and easy access to a wide variety of affordable products – fresh produce, a full grocery department with a bakery and deli, a drive-thru pharmacy with our popular $4 generic prescriptions, health and beauty supplies, select household items, plus a gas station,” Henneberg said in an emailed statement.
Neighborhood Market stores also give customers access to items online through the “Site to Store” service, which makes all of the merchandise on Walmart.com available for purchase and items can be delivered for free to the Walmart neighborhood store.
Walmart currently operates more than 340 Neighborhood Markets nationwide, typically employing 95 associates.
City Manager Tom Hall said at some point before the store opens, a roadway will be constructed opposite Calumet Center Road that will allow access to the store, making it a four-way intersection. The sloped terrain will be cut and graded to accommodate the new road.
There are currently parties interested in surrounding parcels at the location, Hall said, and the site could become a small shopping center in the future.
