Lynda Dawson of Hamilton, formerly of LaGrange, was crowned Ms. Southwest Georgia Senior 2014 at a pageant held in Columbus on April 5.

“Aside from having my arm twisted, I entered the pageant because it’s a new challenge and something I thought I would enjoy,” Dawson said.

She is pursuing it to the next level by competing in the state pageant for the title of Ms. Senior Georgia 2014 on Sunday in Roswell.

In the April pageant, Dawson sang a Patsy Cline hit, “Walking After Midnight” in the talent portion. She actually sings a variety of music including Patsy Cline hits and ‘40s and ‘50s music. She and her husband, Gary, frequently entertain together, performing for area civic events, retirement centers, and senior clubs/organizations. They both sing in the choir at Pine Mountain First United Methodist Church.

Her Statement of Principle, or platform, centers around the music she sings.

“It’s rewarding to bring joy to others and to see the smiles on their faces and their toes tapping,” she said. “Bringing back memories to older generations makes our entertaining worthwhile to us.”

All of the contestants compete in talent, evening gown, interview and on-stage questions taken from their Statement of Principle.

Dawson, 66, served as President of the Harris County Chamber of Commerce for six years before her retirement. She also serves as a volunteer chair of the Harris County Development Authority, member of Harris County Public Improvement Authority, member of the airport committee and member of the GED advisory board.

In her spare time, Lynda enjoys her hobbies which include sewing, remodeling and gardening. She also likes to “re-purpose junk,” which means that she takes something someone else discarded and uses it in a different way to make a useful item.

Lynda and Gary have two daughters: Michelle Dawson and her husband Terry Belcher, who live in West Point with their son Joshua, 11; and Valerie Martin and her husband Scott, who live in LaGrange with their daughter Izzy, 9.
