DASH for LaGrange is preparing to break ground on its first apartment project in West Point.
Forest Mill Apartments will be an 80-unit apartment complex on nine acres located off Hatchett Street in West Point.
DASH Executive Director Cathy Smith said the project will be a $8 million investment and look similar Mallard Lake Apartments in LaGrange, and the nearly complete Stony Ridge Apartments in Hogansville.
“This is our first major DASH project in West Point,” said Smith. “They’re in need of housing and it’s close to the Kia plant. And there are no apartments like that in West Point. It’s a good location, it’s close to services and stores.”
City officials agreed that apartments are a need for the city and could only recall one occupied apartment complex in the city.
The complex will feature a swimming pool, playground, computer room and picnic areas 16 one-bedroom, 40 two-bedroom and 24 three- bedroom units.
Pricing for the apartment units will be determined by the applicants’ income, according to Smith. Applicants making 60 percent or below median income will pay below market rent for one of the 72 units, which will be priced below market rent; Eight units will be priced at market rate for applicants making above median income.
Smith said construction should begin next month and completed by September 2015. Three months prior to completion, applications will be taken for occupancy, Smith said.
