Jimmy stopped in his tracks, looking just ahead at the approaching woman he thought to himself, “Can’t be - is that her, is that Linda? God how I miss her.”
It was indeed Linda, she had just stepped out of her car, closed the door – stepping to the sidewalk she looked up and thought,“Oh my goodness, is that Jimmy?” Seconds passed – glances (better put – bending of heads) were exchanged and as they approached each other they both stopped and the the exchange went something like this: Jimmy, “Linda is that you?” Linda in turn responded, “Yes Jimmy, it’s me.” Both smiled and Linda offered her hand. Jimmy took her hand and instantly the harmless embrace froze him in time. Last time he held her was seven months ago.
Jimmy, never one lost for words said, “Hello Darlin’. Wow, it’s nice to see you. It’s been a long time.” Stepping back from Linda, Jimmy continued, “You’re just as lovely as you used to be.” Linda smiled. Jimmy asked her, “How’s your new love – are you happy?” Before Linda could respond, Jimmy continued, “I sure hope y’all is doing fin. Your happiness means so much to me.” Linda responded very softly, “Didn’t last long Jimmy, that’s over now.” Jimmy stepped closer and said, “What’s that darlin’? Did you ask how I’m doing? Well, guess I’m doing alright.” Jimmy, thinking to himself told his heart, “No I’m not alright – I can’t sleep and I cry all night to dawn.”
Linda – gently pulling her hand away from Jimmy smiled and said – “Guess I’d best be going Jimmy – have an interview for a new job here and I just don’t want to hold you up either.” Jimmy moved in close to Linda and whispered, “Look up darlin’, Let me kiss you just for old time sake. Let me hold you in my arms one more time, Thank you darlin’.” Tears were now visible in Jimmy’s eyes, hugging Linda he continued, “May God bless you and may each step you take bring you closer to the things you seek to find.”
Linda was puzzled. She remembered the pain he left her with. Remembered how she was forced out of his arms into the arms of Bradley, arms that never really brought her the same sense of peace, joy and love as Jimmy’s did. Linda slowly pulling away from Jimmy said, “Take care Jimmy, if y’all want to you can call me, that is if you’d like to.” Jimmy, trying hard not to let Linda’s hand drift from his replied, “Goodbye darlin’ gotta go now, gotta try to find a way to lose these memories, of a love so warm and true. And if you should ever find it in your heart to forgive me, Come back darlin’, I’ll be waiting for you.”
Just hours ago as I sat alone in my office, my Chris miles away, I was listening to my favorite music – my “soul” music and there came this tune by Conway Twitty – “Hello Darlin’”. Here have a listen - http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=hello+darling+conway+twitty&FORM=VIRE1#view=detail&mid=0815A6D64D00638DED490815A6D64D00638DED49.
