Game week for Grangers, Tigers
by By Kevin Eckleberry Sports Editor
They’ve got the preseason games under their belt, not it’s time to start playing for real.
The LaGrange Grangers and Troup Tigers will get their seasons started with games on back-to-back nights this week at Callaway Stadium.
First up will be the Tigers, who’ll take on Redan on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Grangers then take center stage on Friday for the renewal of a long-standing rivalry against the Newnan Cougars at 7:30 p.m.
Callaway is off this week after opening its season with a 34-0 win over Heard County on Friday.
LaGrange and Troup are both looking to avenge season-opening losses from a year ago.
Troup fell to Redan 15-12, while LaGrange lost to Newnan 24-21.
LaGrange, in fact, hasn’t beaten Newnan since its state-championship season of 2004.
Newnan has beaten LaGrange the past five years, and it owns a six-game winning streak in the series.
Newnan opened its season last week with a 52-21 loss to Marietta.
It was a tough night for the Cougars, who allowed 50 points for the first time since 2005 in a playoff loss to Camden County.
It was the first time they’d given up 50 points in a regular-season game since 1980.
Newnan is coming off a 9-3 season, while LaGrange went 6-6, and both teams lost in the second round of the state playoffs.
Troup and Redan are both playing their season openers this week.
A year ago, Redan’s win over Troup was a rare bright spot in a difficult season.
After beat Troup in the season opener, Redan lost its next eight games before finishing the season with a win over South Atlanta.
Troup, meanwhile, went 3-7 a year ago, and it lost all three of its non-region games beginning with the setback against Redan.
Callaway will get back at it on Sept. 6 when it takes on Troup in the renewal of that county rivalry.
