The Callaway Cavaliers are a dynamic offensive football team.

With quarterback Tez Parks, running back Devon Rosser, wide receiver Terry Godwin and a bunch of other weapons, the Cavaliers can put points on the scoreboard in bunches.

As the Cavaliers showed Friday night against Troup, though, they can also find the end zone even when they don’t have the ball.

Callaway scored two defensive touchdowns, and that was critical in a game that was decided by 13 points.

Junior linebacker Labronze Zelaya scored the first defensive touchdown on a 10-yard return in the second quarter that gave Callaway a 20-7 lead.

In the third quarter, junior defensive back Aaron Clausell scooped a ball and went 35 yards for a touchdown, and Callaway led 26-7.

Troup rallied and got within five points, but Callaway held on for a 34-21 victory.

Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said the defensive players are taught to sprint to the ball when they see it on the ground.

Wiggins said defensive coordinator Dusty Hubbard “preaches every day, run to the ball. That really paid off for us.”

While Callaway’s defense wasn’t as dominant as it was in a season-opening 34-0 victory over Heard County, it forced five turnovers, four fumbles and an interception.

Each of those turnovers came at critical points in the game.

“Coach (Jason) Sherrer, coach (Deyano) Martin, coach (Ronnie) Sikes, they all do a great job on the defensive side of the ball,” Wiggins said. “The defense was able to make some big plays.”

UP NEXT: Callaway doesn’t have a game this week, and it will return to action on Sept. 20 for a home game against Harris County.

Harris County, which improved to 1-1 with last week’s 38-27 win over LaGrange, lost to Callaway 24-21 a year ago.

After that loss, Harris County won eight consecutive games before losing in the Class AAAAA quarterfinals.
