The Callaway Cavaliers are coming off three emotional, physical football games, but the games that really count are still to come.

Callaway will begin its Region 4-AAA schedule this week as it looks to win a second consecutive region championship.

A year ago, Callaway rolled to a 7-0 region record, and only one of those games was competitive well into the second half.

Callaway begins its region journey on Friday with a home game against Jackson.

Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins is hopeful the early-season games will have his team ready for region play.

“Playing those kind of teams, hopefully when we get to region, we’ll be ready,” Wiggins said. “All four of those teams, in Troup, and Heard, and Harris, and Shaw (in the preseason game), they’re all well-coached, and they have great football players. We feel like it’s good preparing us for the region.”

One of Callaway’s challengers for the region crown figures to be Central-Carroll, which is off to a terrific start this season.

The Lions are 4-1, and they’re out-scoring their opponents by an average score of 34-7.

The Lions, who are off to their best start since 2005, are also 2-0 in the region, and they won those games by a combined score of 106-0.

First year Central head coach Rico Zackery told the newspaper in Carrollton “you really can’t look at it like you’re 4-1. You’ve just got to look at every single week. This week’s another week. We’ve got to move on and play hard. Just like we did last week.”

Chapel Hill (1-3 overall) is 1-0 in the region, while Haralson County (1-3) and Rockmart (1-3) are each 0-1 in region play.

Callaway (2-1), Jackson (2-1) and B.E.S.T. Academy (2-1) have yet to play a region game.
