CARROLLTON - The LaGrange Lady Grangers are heading to the state tournament riding high.
The Lady Grangers edged the Carrollton Lady Trojans 2-1 on Thursday, and they wrapped up the third spot in Region 5-AAAA in the process.
The Lady Grangers improved to 20-8, and they’ve won 11 of their past 12 games, and they’re on a six-game winning streak.
Next up for LaGrange will be a first-round series in the state playoffs against the second-place team from Region 8-AAAA.
LaGrange needed to beat Carrollton to wrap up the region’s third seed, and it made it happen, with senior pitcher Emily Anderson delivering another strong outing.
Earlier this season, Anderson threw an eight-inning shutout in a 1-0 victory over Carrollton.
In the rematch, Anderson pitched seven innings, and she threw a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts, and she gave up just one unearned run.
Carrollton pitcher Katie Jones, who surrendered two unearned runs, was the tough-luck loser.
All of the game’s runs were scored in the fifth inning.
In the top of the inning, there were two outs when Taylor Storey walked, and Te’a Winston singled to put runners on first and second.
The inning stayed alive when Anderson reached on an error, with Storey scoring the game’s first run on the play.
After Karsin Spinks was walked to load the bases, Makenzie Traylor’s base hit made it a 2-0 game.
Carrollton scored an unearned run of its own in the bottom of the fifth.
Taylor Schroeder reached on an error, and she stole second and scored when the throw went into center field.
Anderson clamped down from there, and Carrollton was unable to notch the tying run.
The Lady Grangers now turn their attention to the state tournament, and they’ll be on the road for a best-of-three series beginning Wednesday.
CALLAWAY: The Lady Cavaliers lost to Rockmart 12-0 on Thursday in the Region 4-AAA tournament in Carrollton.
Callaway finished as the number four seed in the region, and it will be on the road next week for the first round of the state tournament.
Callaway will play the number one seed from Region 1-AAA.
