The state-playoff journey will begin for the softball teams from Callaway and LaGrange this week, with both teams hitting the road for first-round matchups on Wednesday.

Callaway will have the shorter journey.

After finishing fourth in Region 4-AAA, Callaway will travel to Zebulon to face Pike County, the champion of Region 2-AAA.

LaGrange, meanwhile, will head to the northwest corner of the state for its state opener.

LaGrange, the third-place team from Region 5-AAAA, will face Northwest Whitfield, the second-place team from Region 7-AAAA.

Callaway earned its place at state by finishing fourth in its region tournament.

The Lady Cavaliers (15-16 overall) went 8-7 in the region in the regular season, and they then won three straight games in the region tournament to qualify for state.

After thumping Jackson 15-0 in its first tournament game, Callaway swept Haralson County 2-0 and 1-0 in a best-of-three series.

The Lady Cavaliers lost their final two tournament games, but their state spot was secured after beating Haralson County.

Pike County, meanwhile, dominated Region 2-AAA in the regular season, and in the tournament.

After going 9-0 against region foes in the regular season, the Lady Pirates won their three region-tournament games, including a 4-1 win over Jackson in the championship game.

Callaway and Pike County will play a best-of-three series.

They’ll play two games on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m., and if needed, a third game would be Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

LaGrange will look to continue its red-hot play in the state tournament.

The Lady Grangers (20-8 overall) went 11-3 in Region 5-AAAA, and they finished just one game behind Columbus and Alexander for first place.

The Lady Grangers have won six in a row, and they’ve won 11 of their past 12 games.

LaGrange’s opponent this week has also had an exceptional season.

Northwest Whitfield began the season on a 13-game winning streak, and it posted a 28-6 record in the regular season.

Northwest Whitfield lost to Heritage-Coosa 8-7 in the region-championship game.

LaGrange and Northwest Whitfield will play two games on Wednesday, with the first game set for 5 p.m.

A third game would be played Thursday if necessary.

The second round of the state playoffs will also feature best-of-three series, and the scene then shifts to Columbus for the final eight.
