The Lafayette Christian School Cougars will never forget their first playoff win.

Facing Praise Academy in an eight-man game Friday night, the Cougars had the ball late, and they were facing a six-point deficit.

The Cougars needed a touchdown and an extra point to take the lead, and they made it happen.

The Cougars got in position when Sam Marshall caught a long pass from quarterback Matt Brown.

“He made a great catch that set us up deep in their territory,” Lafayette Christian coach Nick Nehring said. “It was a huge play.”

Brown then finished off the drive with a touchdown run to tie it, and Jeremy Fain converted the extra point to give the Cougars a 39-38 lead with 1:45 remaining.

Praise Academy moved the ball down the field, and it found itself with the ball on the Lafayette Christian 6-yard line with nine seconds left.

After a timeout, Praise Academy decided to go with a running play, meaning the game was going to be over one way or another on that play.

The Cougars came through with the defensive stop, with the Praise Academy running back going down at the 2-yard line.

“Matt Brown came up and made a great play on defense,” Nehring said. “A couple of guys were there.”

The clock ran out, and the Cougars had the 39-38 win.

“It was one of the wildest games we’ve ever had,” Nehring said.

The victory puts the Cougars in the semifinals of the Independent Christian Schools of Georgia and Alabama Athletic Association playoffs against Harvester Christian.

“It was just awesome,” Nehring said. “It’s great to be on the winning side of it, that’s for sure.”
