Busy day for Grangers

The LaGrange High wrestling team went 2-2 during the Granger Duals on Saturday.
LaGrange beat Heard County and Northgate, and it lost to St. Clair (Ala.) and Upson-Lee.
“We had a good day. There were a lot more positives than negatives,” LaGrange coach Scooter Weathers said. “Of course the negative was not placing or winning. But at this point of the year, that’s really not what’s important. We’ll get back to practice and get better every day.”
After opening with a 60-24 win over Heard County, LaGrange lost to St. Clair 45-36.
St. Clair went on to capture the tournament title.
“They were really a good team,” Weathers said. “I like how we wrestled against someone who was really tough. They didn’t have a weak sister in their lineup.”
LaGrange then lost to Upson-Lee, and Weathers said “we wrestled a bunch of guys who hadn’t got to wrestle yet.”
In its final match, LaGrange beat Northgate 54-24.
Weathers said nearly everyone on the team got at least one match.
“We had about 42 kids, and 37 of them got matches,” Weathers said.
OF NOTE: Before the tournament started on Saturday, a ceremony was held to retire three singlets that belonged to Stefan Smith, the former LaGrange High wrestler who was killed in Afghanistan earlier this year while serving in the U.S. Army. Frames with singlets were presented to Smith’s mother and father, and one will be on display at LaGrange High. For more on the ceremony, see Tuesday’s sports section.
