NEWNAN - The LaGrange Lady Grangers got a big road win on Saturday.
The Lady Grangers (2-3) used a huge second quarter to take a 15-point lead at the half, and they held off a hard-charging Newnan team to claim a 49-46 victory.
Erica Daniel led LaGrange with 13 points, and Andrea Heflin added 12 points, with Cheteyha Tucker chipping in with 10 points.
Newnan held a 10-9 lead after the first quarter, but LaGrange dominated the second period to take control.
LaGrange outscored Newnan 22-6 in the second period to go up 31-16 at the half.
Heading into the final quarter, LaGrange’s lead was 41-28.
Newnan came roaring back in the fourth period, getting as close as three points late, but LaGrange was able to hang on for the win.
In the boys’ game, the Grangers had a chance late to pull off the road win.
Trailing by one point, the Grangers had a couple of opportunities late in the game to take the lead, but they were unable to convert.
The home-standing Newnan Cougars held on for a 59-58 victory over the Grangers, who fell to 3-2.
LaGrange’s first chance to take the lead was denied when a Newnan player took a charge with three seconds remaining.
After a missed free throw, LaGrange got the ball back with another chance to win it, but a desperation heave from half court went awry.
Laperion Perry paced the Grangers with 13 points, and Derieko Smith and Dy Dunlap added 12 points.
The Grangers started quickly, taking a 17-9 lead after the first quarter.
The Grangers’ lead was down to 33-30 at the half, and they led 49-48 through three quarters.
It remained a tight game throughout the fourth period, with Newnan securing the win.
