Lanett edges Callaway

LANETT, Ala. - The Callaway Lady Cavaliers did a lot of things right Saturday afternoon against the Lanett Lady Panthers.
The one thing the Lady Cavaliers were unable to do, though, was corral Lanett’s outstanding post player, Miracle Mayo.
Mayo delivered 29 points, and she dominated the action inside to lead Lanett to a 60-50 victory.
“We did all we could to try to defend her. We tried to stop her from getting all the rebounds,” Callaway head coach Deyano Martin said. “It’s hard to box her out and keep her off the boards. She plays really hard. She made a big difference for their team.”
Callaway came out strong.
The Lady Cavaliers, with Tanesha Johnson scoring eight points, grabbed a 14-8 lead after the first quarter, and by the half they were ahead 26-20.
In the third period, Mayo took over.
Mayo scored 14 points in the third period, and Lanett outscored Callaway 24-15 to go up 44-41 heading into the final quarter.
Mayo added eight more points in the fourth period as Lanett pulled away.
Mayo scored 22 of her team’s 38 points in the second half.
“We were in the game the whole time, we even led at times,” Mayo said. “Sometimes, great players, they’re going to show up and they’re going to make big plays. She did that. She got a few key rebounds and putbacks and kept us from going on a run. And they pulled it out in the end. You’ve got to give them credit for that.”
Johnson finished with 17 points to lead Callaway, and Monica Jackson added 11 points.
