COLUMBUS - The Shaw Raiders hit a basket with two seconds left to secure a 57-55 victory over the LaGrange Grangers on Friday in the Region 5-AAAA opener for both teams.


LaGrange’s Danterrious Bray hit the game-tying basket with 15 seconds, but that left plenty of time for Shaw to set up a potential game-winning shot.


‘The guy backed us down, and made a shot over one of our guys,” LaGrange coach Mike Pauley said. “He just made a good play.”


LaGrange was unable to get a shot away at the end, and Shaw escaped wtih the win.


The Grangers fell to 6-5, and all five of their losses have been by small margins.


LaGrange hasn’t lost a game by more than five points this season.


Looking ahead to the rest of the region schedule, Pauley figures there will be a lot more close games to come.


“It’s going to be that way with our young guys,” Pauley said. “We just have to work to improve.”


The Lady Grangers were also involved in a tight game, but they ended up on the winning end.


In a game that went to overtime, LaGrange held on for a 47-45 victory.


The Lady Grangers improved to 3-6, and they have won back-to-back games for the first time this season.


LaGrange had the lead with a minute left in the fourth quarter, but Shaw fought back to tie it and force overtime.


In the extra period, LaGrange took the lead early on, and it didn’t relinquish it.


Antoinesha Dozier led LaGrange with 15 points.


LaGrange’s teams will be on the road again on Tuesday to face region foe Columbus.
