Signing day isn’t just about football.
On Wednesday, a pair of local athletes signed their letters of intent in other sports as well.
Troup softball player Alex Duncan signed with Northwest Florida State College, and LaGrange High cross country and track and field standout Sarah Bearden signed with Georgia State.
Duncan is coming off a sensational senior season where she hit close to .600 while banging out six home runs.
Now, Duncan will get a chance to play on the next level for the two-year school in Niceville, Fla.
“It’s been a dream, ever since I was a little kid,” Duncan said. “I think about it every day. I’m just so blessed that I got the chance to get a scholarship, and accomplish my dreams and my goals.”
While Duncan has wrapped up her time as a high-school athlete, Bearden still has some work to do.
Bearden is preparing for the track and field season that begins this month, and she’ll attempt to follow up on her exceptional junior season.
At the state meet last spring, Bearden finished fourth in the 1,600-meter run.
In cross country, Bearden finished 11th in state last fall after finishing sixth in 2012.
“She has been one of the hardest workers we have ever had in the program, and today is one of the proudest moments you can have as a coach,” said Brad Wilson, the head cross-country coach and an assistant coach in track and field. “I have no doubt she’ll have a great four years at Georgia State, and I’m excited to follow her career.”
