The bracket has opened up in a big way for the LaGrange College men’s basketball team.
If the Panthers were able to win their first-round game, they figured they’d be headed for a second-round match-up with top-seeded Maryville.
LaGrange College did its part with an 88-76 victory over North Carolina-Wesleyan.
Maryville, though, suffered a stunning loss on its home floor.
Greensboro, the number eight seed, ended Maryville’s season with a 91-83 victory.
LaGrange College, the number four seed, will face Greensboro at 7 p.m. today, with the winner advancing to Saturday’s championship game.
The number two seed, Averett, is also out of the tournament after losing to seventh-seeded Ferrum 77-71 on Thursday.
The winner of the tournament advances to the NCAA Division III national tournament.
LaGrange College had a balanced scoring effort in Thursday’s win, with all five starters scoring in double figures.
Dustin Baxter and Denzel Robinson each had 17 points, and Mark Wagner scored 16 points.
Patrick Dugger added 15 points, and Nick Mitchell scored 13 points.
The Panthers held a 46-43 lead at the half, and the game was tied at 61-61 with 9:26 remaining.
The Panthers took over from there and won going away.
LaGrange College and Greensboro have played once this season, with the Panthers winning 86-76 on Jan. 5.
