The LaGrange College Panthers will try to avoid a series sweep when they host Ferrum (Va.) today in the finale of a three-game series.

The teams played twice on Sunday, and it was Ferrum coming away with a pair of wins.

The Panthers (3-10 overall) fell to 1-4 in the USA South.

In Sunday’s first game, Zack Tatham pitched well for the Panthers, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Ferrum from claiming a 3-1 win.

The second game was all Ferrum, which scored seven runs in the fifth inning on the way to a 15-5 victory.

In Sunday’s first game, Tatham pitched six innings, and he gave up five hits and two runs to keep the Panthers in the game.

The Panthers had no answer for Ferrum starter Jake Perkins, though, who pitched a complete game.

The Panthers had seven hits, but Perkins was able to limit the damage.

Ty Edwards had two of the Panthers’ hits with an RBI.

In the second game, Ferrum was already up 3-0 when it broke it open with seven runs in the fifth inning.

The Panthers were down 13-0 when they put three runs on the scoreboard in the sixth inning, and they added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Justin Yestrumsky started for the Panthers, and he struggled through four innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) and eight hits.

Patrick Riley gave up a pair of runs in relief before Gage Mooney, Ryan Gajda and Josh Bricker pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball.

The Panthers finished with 12 hits, and Cain Sauls had a three-hit effort with an RBI.

Alex Murfin and Chad Pigg each had two hits, and Alec Redden had two RBIs.

The Panthers (10-4 overall) are 3-3 in the USA South.

In the first game, the Panthers had a 3-1 lead through three innings, but Ferrum scored one run in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Dani Gravett started and pitched five innings, and she gave up four hits and two runs.

Olivia Wolfe pitched one inning and gave up an unearned run and was the tough-luck loser.

The Panthers had 10 hits, and 10 players had one hit apiece, including Wolfe, who drove in two runs and had a home run.

In the second game, Ferrum built a 5-0 lead before LaGrange College scored two runs in the top of the seventh.
