By the time this week is over, the LaGrange High boys’ soccer team could have a region championship in hand.

If the Grangers win at Sandy Creek today and beat Columbus at home on Thursday, they will be the top dog in Region 5-AAAA.

The Grangers could win those two games and still finish in a tie for first with a loss to the rival Troup Tigers on April 11.

The Grangers would have the tie-breaker edge over anyone else that could finish tied for first, though.

The Columbus game is the big one.

The Blue Devils are unbeaten, and they’re one of the state’s top teams.

The Grangers (8-2, 4-0 in region play), meanwhile, have won seven of their past eight games, and they haven’t given up a goal in their four region victories.

The Grangers have beaten Alexander, Shaw, Carrollton and Fayette County, and they haven’t given up a goal in any of those games.

In their most recent region win, LaGrange made a first-half goal from Michael Brackett stand up in a 1-0 win over Fayette County.

LaGrange also beat Carrollton 3-0, Shaw 2-0, and Alexander 2-0.

Brackett leads the Grangers with eight goals, and he scored all three of the team’s goals in the past two games.

Jackson Fagundes has seven goals, and he leads the team with five assists.

Griffin Bartley has added three goals, and Yimmi Posada has two goals.

After this week’s games, the Grangers will have five regular-season games, but only one of those will be against a region opponent.

LaGrange’s girls’ team will look to bolster its playoff hopes when it faces Sandy Creek today.

The Lady Grangers (5-5 overall) are 2-2 in the region, and they need to finish in the top four to make it to state.

LaGrange has relied heavily on sophomore Reagan Peters this season.

Peters has 17 of the team’s 35 goals, and Lauren Yates also has six goals.

On Thursday, LaGrange will host a Columbus team that is expected to compete for a state championship.

Also this week, the Troup High soccer teams will try to bolster their playoff hopes.

The Lady Tigers won their first two region games, but they fell to 2-1 in Region 5-AAAA with Friday’s loss to Carrollton.

Troup opened its region schedule with wins over Fayette County and Shaw.

The Tigers, meanwhile, are 1-2 in the region, with a win over Shaw and losses to Fayette County and Carrollton.

First up for the Troup teams will be today’s games at Alexander, and they’ll finish the week at Sandy Creek on Thursday.

The Callaway soccer teams, who are both in good shape to earn a playoff spot in Region 4-AAA, will play at Douglass today, and that will be it for the week.

The Cavaliers (9-3 overall) have been rolling of late, and they will carry a 3-1 region record into today’s game.

Since dropping their region opener to Central-Carroll, the Cavaliers have won five straight games overall, and three in a row in the region.

Callaway has responded to its 3-0 loss to Central-Carroll with some terrific soccer.

“We took that loss personal,” Callaway coach Jake Hembree said. “A lot of our goals are on hold with that loss.”

The Cavaliers still have a chance to finish first in the region if they beat Douglass and Rockmart in their region finale on April 15.

Central-Carroll is unbeaten in the region, and Chapel Hill is tied with Callaway for second place.

Chapel Hill hosts Central-Carroll today.

The Lady Cavaliers (7-4) lost their first two region games, but they have won their past two region games to even their record at 2-2.

The Lady Cavaliers would wrap up a playoff spot with a win today.
