The Callaway Cavaliers are closing in on a region championship.

They’d hoped to take a big step toward achieving that goal on Friday, but their game against Rockmart was postponed because of rain and will be made up on Tuesday at home.

Callaway’s next game will be a huge one.

On Monday, Callaway will host Central-Carroll in a match-up of the region’s top two teams.

While the Cavaliers are leading the region with a 10-1 record, Central-Carroll is just one game behind at 9-2.

Central already has a victory over Callaway in hand, so if it wins Monday’s game, it would own the tie-breaker advantage if the two teams finish tied.

Beating Central “would definitely go a long way” toward securing the region title, according to Callaway coach Dusty Hubbard said.

Callaway then turns around on Tuesday and plays a Rockmart team that is in the playoff race with a 6-4 record.

Callaway closes its region schedule with a doubleheader against Jackson on Wednesday, and those games don’t figure to offer much of a challenge.

So if the Cavaliers win Monday and Tuesday, the region title will most likely belong to them.

It will be a busy final week of the regular season for the Cavaliers.

After the region games on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, they’ll step out of the region to play at Hardaway on Thursday.

Callaway will close the regular season at Harris County on April 26.

“That’ll be good to go in and get some guys some playing time, and get some guys some at-bats in those last couple of games,” Callaway head coach Dusty Hubbard said.

Callaway will begin the state playoffs on May 2.
