The LaGrange High soccer teams celebrated senior night in style.
Facing Brookstone on Tuesday at Callaway Stadium, the Lady Grangers won 3-2 on a goal by Lauren Yates, while the Grangers got a single goal from Griffin Bartley on the way to a 1-0 victory.
In the girls’ game, it looked like the teams were headed for a tie ballgame when Yates came through with the game-winner.
The ball was loose near the Brookstone goal, and players from both teams were trying to get their foot on it.
Yates was able to make contact and score the winning goal with just 18 seconds left in the game.
“We had kind of like a dogpile in front of the goal, and she wound up kicking it in,” LaGrange coach Rusty Cook said.
Also scoring goals for LaGrange were Madeline Marshall and Reagan Peters, and Alex Davison had a pair of assists off corner kicks, including one on the game winner.
After the game, the team’s seniors, Tori Willis, Marshall and Davison were honored.
“It’s good to get a win, especially on senior night,” Cook said. “You’re not going to the playoffs, so it kind of gives you a boost going into next season.”
LaGrange (7-9) will wrap up its season with a game at Callaway today at 5 p.m.
In the boys’ game, the Grangers wrapped up their regular season with the 1-0 win.
The Grangers finished with a stellar 12-4 record, and that included a 7-0 mark in Region 5-AAAA play.
In Tuesday’s non-region game, the Grangers got a first-half goal from Bartley on an assist from Michael Brackett, and that was it for the scoring.
LaGrange’s defense, as has been the case all season, was outstanding.
It was the Grangers’ sixth shutout of the season, and they’ve allowed one or fewer goals in all but three of their matches.
LaGrange will be at home for the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday.
