The LaGrange High boys’ soccer team will continue its quest for a state championship on Tuesday when it hosts Stone Mountain in the second round of the state playoffs.

Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Callaway Stadium.

LaGrange, which won the Region 5-AAAA championship, began its state-tournament stay with a 3-0 win over Cedartown.

Stone Mountain, the third-place team from Region 6-AAAA, beat Chestatee 1-0 in the first round of the playoffs.

LaGrange and Stone Mountain have already played once this season, and it was a thriller.

In a match played at Stone Mountain, each team scored one goal in regulation, and it remained tied 1-1 through two overtime periods.

Stone Mountain then won on penalty kicks to take the 2-1 win.

If LaGrange wins on Tuesday, it would be at home in the third round against either Spalding County or Americus-Sumter.

BASEBALL: There won’t be a rematch.

A year ago, Callaway won its first-round series in the state playoffs, but it lost to Dodge County in the second round.

There was a chance those same two teams could meet again in the second round this year, but that’s not going to happen.

Callaway did its part by sweeping Central-Macon in the first round, but Dodge County lost its first-round series to Appling County.

Dodge County and Appling split the first two games on Friday, and Appling won the series with a 3-2 victory on Saturday.

Callaway will host Appling County on Wednesday, and the teams will play two games.

A third game, if needed, would be played on Thursday.

Appling County won the first game of its first-round series 8-0, but Dodge County rebounded to win the second game 4-3.

That set up a winner-take-all game on Saturday, and it was Appling County surviving for the 3-2 win.

Appling County finished second in Region 1-AAA.

LaGrange, meanwhile, will be on the road for its second-round match-up.

Lanier, which beat Grady in a series that went the full three games, will host LaGrange on Wednesday.

Grady and Lanier each won a game on Friday, and Lanier clinched the series win with a 6-2 win on Saturday.

Lanier finished third in Region 8-AAAA.
